Boxing as Medicine š„ | Rock Steady
I was walking past my local gym when a flyer stopped me in my tracks.
āBoxing Classes for Parkinsonās.ā
I blinked. Was that a typo?
I wouldnāt have put those words together. In fact, my first thought was:
Doesnāt boxing cause Parkinsonās?
And sometimes curiosity is enough to crack open a door.
I stepped through that door and into something unexpected.
Today, I volunteer in a program called Rock Steady Boxing.
A non-contact boxing class designed specifically for people with Parkinsonās.
We donāt fight each other.
We fight backāagainst apathy, degeneration, isolation.
One movement at a time.
And what Iāve witnessed there is nothing short of transformative.
šMore Than a Workout
We start with warmups. We call out punch sequences and try to remember them.
We do resistance band work, footwork drills, core strengthening.
The room is full of focus & laughter.
Thereās a return of rhythm, of grace.
A soft reclaiming of space inside their own bodies.
šHow Does It Work?
The foundation of Rock Steady Boxing is neuroplasticity.
Neuroplasticity is the brainās ability to rewire itself by forming new neural connections.
š”In Parkinsonās, the brainās usual motor pathways are damaged. But the brain is adaptive. Through repetitive, high-effort movement combined with cognitive challenge, new pathways can be formed.
Hereās how:
š§ Cognitive-Motor Integration
Call-and-response punch combos engage memory and quick thinking.
Dual-task drills (like counting backwards while punching) strengthen mental agility.
š„ Boxing-Specific Training
Shadowboxing improves body awareness and flow.
Heavy bag work builds rhythm and power.
Focus mitt drills sharpen timing and coordination.
š£ Balance & Mobility
Tandem walking and cone drills restore confidence in movement.
Sit-to-stand exercises build functional strength.
š§ Recovery & Flexibility
Dynamic warm-ups and stretching ease stiffness and improve range of motion.
š§ Space of Repair
This is not a miracle cure. Parkinsonās is still present.
Rock Steady goal is to not erase symptoms.
Instead itās about building strength, dignity, & mind body connection.
In a body that sometimes feels like itās working against you.
This is healing through motion. Itās the fight to stay connected.
To oneself, to community, to possibility.
In that space, we donāt fight Parkinsonās.
We outlast itāone jab at a time.
